Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze (WiiU)
I don't play my WiiU very much mainly because there aren't many games for it but I read some great reviews of DK and thought I'd give it a try. The game looks gorgeous and the music is awesome, I want to play some levels again just to hear the music which is something I've never done before. The game play is difficult though and some of the check pointing is far off so I've had to replay a couple of sections repeatedly. Overall I'm enjoying my time and would recommend.
Banished (Steam)
I was really wanting a new Sim City and when it was announced I was pumped, but unfortunately is wasn't that great. The first 8 hours were fun but then when you had to create a new city just to dump your garbage and it lost it's luster. Banished still isn't the Sim City game I wanted but it adds some neat ideas to the genre that make it interesting.
Banished is really about survival rather than building epic cities, it's focus is on creating a functioning town that will be able to endure fires, famines, and other realistic obstacles real people face everyday. Do you have enough food, do you have enough fire wood to keep warm, it's all basic stuff but if you get greedy and over expand your city too quickly a catastrophe is waiting to happen. The game was made by one person but it doesn't feel like it. There are a lot of building to create and different systems to understand so it's not a basic game, the tutorial took me almost an hour and I still have a couple left to do.
It's $20 and it you are wanting a city building game and Sim City left you feeling upset give this game a try.

DanganRopa Trigger Happy Havoc, Titanfall Beta
DanganRopa Trigger Happy Havoc (Vita)
Put in about 4 hours with the game and it's pretty awesome. It's kind of a point and click adventure game mixed with Ace Attorney and Persona. The basic premise of the game is that you were chosen to attend a special school that is guaranteed to produce successful people. You enter the school and immediately the screen goes black and you wake up in a classroom without knowing what is going on. From there you meet the other 15 classmates and are greeted by a strange talking bear who tells you that the only way to get out of the school is to kill another classmate and get away with it.
It's a strange and quirky game but is really fun to play. Most of the game is roaming around the school and talking with the other students trying to build relationships until a murder occurs and then you have to find clues and eventually have to prove who is the murderer, if you choose the wrong person then everyone but the murderer dies. The writing is well done and the music is great, the game just has a cool style that makes it different than any other game I've played.
It's on the Vita and I highly recommend the game if you have one.
Titanfall Beta
Got into the Xbox One beta this weekend and played through the tutorial and a couple of matches. It's pretty fun but I think it's going to have trouble because of the high expectations that have been put on this game. The movement in the game is really nice, as a soldier you can run along walls and double jump so moving around the level is fast and feels exciting. The mechs also control well and have a dash move and some other perks that does mix up the game play well. The AI is kind of suspect as there are AI bots in the game along side real people which is different than other FPS games as there are more people on the battlefield making it more frantic.
Basement
They got the sheetrock put up and floated this weekend so the next steps are to lay down the wood floor, place the trim, and then paint. I picked out the carpet and the paint colors this weekend, I went with gray for everything. I thought about painting the back wall and part of the ceiling black to reduce the light bouncing off the screen, but I will probably just put up some fabric as that is better at absorbing light and will help with the sound. Hopefully they will have everything done in the next 2 weeks.
New Releases - Quite a few games coming out this week and even a release for the Dreamcast. Thief is coming next week.

Threes, Splinter Cell
Threes (IOS)
An addictive IOS game that has you matching numbered tiles in multiples of 3's. The game is a simple puzzle game but the sound effects really make the game. Each time you combine tiles it plays a sound effect of a voice saying a greeting and it's hard to believe but that makes the game for me, so much charm in a little voice. It's $2 and well worth it.
Splinter Cell: Conviction (Steam)
I bought Splinter Cell Blacklist when it came out and played a bit but I never finished Conviction and Blacklist is kind of a sequel so I decided to finish the game this weekend and I succeeded. I haven't played a game straight through in quite awhile and it felt great. I really enjoyed the game and do recommend it.
Splinter Cell: Blacklist (Uplay)
For some reason I wanted to be stealthy this weekend. After finishing Conviction I went straight into Blacklist and it's very easy to see how much technology have changed in a short time. Conviction looks great but Blacklist is on another level especially on PC where they are using some really fancy tech. The game is gorgeous and has some outstanding lighting effects. The game play also feels much better and smoother. The controls are a little different so I'm having to get out of the habit of a few button presses that do something different. The game is a blast to play and the levels have 3 or 4 pathways through so you can experiment with different play styles.
Basement
They worked hard last week to try and get the sheet rock put up, mainly so the contractor can get his next draw, but they weren't able to start because of inspections. The plumbing and electrical inspections went fine but they also have to get the HVAC inspected as well before the sheet rock goes up, it doesn't make much sense because all of the work was in the crawlspace but they weren't quite finished with that so they spent all weekend finishing that up. Once the sheet rock is done then I think painting is next and I'm still debating the color. I will probably go all gray, maybe 2 different shades, and put up velvet behind the screen. The screen will take up most of the wall and the velvet will give it a theater look.
New Releases - A ton of new releases this week.

GridIron Solitaire, Might and Magic X, Skryim, Basement
GridIron Solitaire (Steam)
I've been reading the Dubious Quality blog for over 4 years and he decided to make a game without any programming knowledge. He's been working on it for 2 years and it's finally out and it's fantastic. It's a solitaire card game that is based on American Football which doesn't sound that it would work, but the choices you make in the game feel like real football choices. He is an expert on simulation football so the stats in the game are on par with real football. At the end of the season you will have opportunities to improve various aspects of your team. I've been playing for the last week and it's strange how tense you can get while reading text events. It's $10 on Steam and well worth the money.
Might and Magic X
I've played about an hour and it's been pretty fun so far. I never really played the older games in the series but I did play the Eye of the Beholder games which were similar. I've read some things about balance issues so I'm waiting on a patch or two before I really start my adventure. It was in early access for awhile and was finally released last week.
Skyrim
I've finally found an ENB that I can use that is playable and makes Skyrim look incredible. I'm using the Quietncool ENB and I'm getting about 40fps in high congested areas and 60 in interiors so it works well.
Basement
Spent the weekend running my speakers and other AV wires, I am not built for that line of work. I almost broke my finger while changing out a bit using a chuck. I ran 20 different wires with most of them being in the crawlspace so I spent a lot of time on my knees and even though I had knee pads I'm very sore this morning. I have a couple more to run and will need to finish quickly as they hope to have the drywall up by Friday. Next up is the hard choices of what colors to use for the floor, tile, and paint. I'm thinking I want a dark grey paint and grey carpet with some sort of texture. I would like the screen wall to be black and at least part of the ceiling black so that it won't diminish my light output.
